School Employee Arrested After Racist Deepfake Recording of Principal Spreads

In the Baltimore area, a high school athletic director faced arrest for allegedly utilizing artificial intelligence software to fabricate a racist and antisemitic audio clip, according to law enforcement authorities.

Dazhon Darien, the athletic director at Pikesville High School, purportedly created the audio recording, which included derogatory remarks impersonating the school's principal, Eric Eiswert, as part of an attempt to tarnish Eiswert's reputation, the Baltimore County Police Department stated.

The falsified recording, disseminated via Instagram in mid-January, swiftly circulated, sparking turmoil within Baltimore County Public Schools, one of the nation's largest districts serving over 100,000 students. Amid the ensuing investigation, Principal Eiswert, who denied the allegations, faced a deluge of threats to his safety, prompting his placement on administrative leave, as confirmed by the school district.

Darien now faces charges, including disrupting school operations and stalking the principal. Efforts to reach him for comment following his release on bond were unsuccessful.

This incident reflects a broader trend of AI misuse in educational settings, with deepfake technologies being increasingly employed to create convincing but false content. Recent instances across the United States have seen male students using AI to produce fake nude images of their female peers, some as young as 12. The Baltimore County case underscores the risks posed by AI to educators and school leaders.

Such misuse not only undermines trust within school communities but also poses significant challenges for authorities tasked with safeguarding students and staff. Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive examination of AI's potential for misuse and abuse, emphasizing the importance of community awareness and vigilance.

The police investigation revealed that Darien developed animosity toward Principal Eiswert after facing scrutiny over unauthorized payments made to his roommate. Using district internet services, Darien sought AI tools, including those developed by OpenAI and Microsoft, eventually creating and disseminating the deepfake audio clip.

The fabricated recording, distributed to news outlets and community organizations, rapidly spread across social media platforms, inciting widespread condemnation of Principal Eiswert. The fallout from the incident strained relationships within the school, prompting concerns over safety and the spread of misinformation.

Amid mounting tensions, law enforcement authorities provided increased security measures for Principal Eiswert, who endured a barrage of threatening messages and calls. The incident prompted appeals for fair treatment and thorough investigation from community leaders and advocacy groups.
