Tragic Incident in Brazil: British Holidaymaker's Fiancée Killed During Robbery, Man Left Fighting for Mobility

In a devastating turn of events, British holidaymaker Philip Donald Eric Gray, 38, was left facing the possibility of permanent disability after a robbery gone wrong in Brazil claimed the life of his fiancée, Ruth Mary Silva de Oliveira Ribeiro, 46. The couple's dream of a future together was tragically shattered when a gunman attacked them in the lobby of their beachside hotel in Praia do Cumbuco.

Heroic Attempt to Shield Fiancée Ends in Tragedy

Philip recounted the horrifying ordeal, revealing how he instinctively tried to protect Mary as the gunman opened fire. "The robber fired once and missed, then took aim at Mary. I dived in front of her, wrapping my arms around her to shield her," he said, reflecting on his brave but heart-wrenching attempt to save the woman he loved. Despite his efforts, Mary was fatally wounded, and Philip sustained three gunshot injuries, one of which struck his spine, leaving him facing an uncertain future.

CCTV Footage Reveals the Horrific Attack

CCTV footage captured the terrifying moment the masked assailant, wearing a crash helmet, stormed the hotel lobby and demanded the couple hand over a bag containing cash. The footage shows the attacker attempting to drag Mary away, prompting Philip to intervene. The struggle escalated, spilling into the hotel gardens, where the gunman unleashed a volley of bullets. While Philip lay injured, he witnessed the heartbreaking sight of his fiancée lifeless just feet away.

Questions Surround the Motive

Local reports suggest that the couple, who had been carrying over £4,000 in cash, may have been targeted. Philip expressed his suspicions, pointing to the receptionist's seemingly calm demeanor during the attack. "I think we were set up," he remarked, noting that the receptionist remained unusually composed as the terrifying scene unfolded. The gunman ultimately made off with a mere £130 and a carry-on suitcase, leading to further speculation about the true motive behind the attack.

A Heartbreaking Goodbye

Philip and Mary had been together for nearly six years, their relationship blossoming after meeting online. They were preparing to marry and had been looking forward to a future filled with love and adventure. However, their plans were cruelly cut short. "I've not stopped crying since Monday," Philip shared, still coming to terms with the loss of the woman he was ready to spend his life with. He had been unable to say goodbye to Mary as her body was transported back to her hometown of Macapa.

Family Grieves, Police Investigate

Mary leaves behind three children and a young grandson. Her family, devastated by the news, has been grappling with the sudden loss. Clara Thalia, Mary's daughter, recounted the moment they learned of the tragedy, describing how Philip, despite his own injuries, managed to make a video call to her brother, shielding them from the full horror of the scene.

As authorities continue their investigation, Brazil's Secretary of Public Security and Social Defence has confirmed that four murder squads are working tirelessly to track down the gunman and his accomplice. The British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) is also involved, providing assistance to Philip's family during this difficult time.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk even in seemingly idyllic destinations, and the heartbreaking impact such violence can have on the lives of those caught in its path.
