Trump Calls for GOP to Help Pay Harris Campaign Debt, Citing "Desperately Needed UNITY!"

In a surprising call for unity, former President Donald Trump suggested on Saturday that the Republican Party consider using its surplus funds to help cover the reported campaign debts of Vice President Kamala Harris, emphasizing the need for bipartisan support in what he described as a time of “desperately needed UNITY.”

Taking to Truth Social, Trump said, "I am very surprised that the Democrats, who fought a hard and valiant fight in the 2024 Presidential Election, raising a record amount of money, didn’t have lots of $’s left over. Now they are being squeezed by vendors and others. Whatever we can do to help them during this difficult period, I would strongly recommend we, as a Party and for the sake of desperately needed UNITY, do."

Harris Campaign’s Financial Strain

Harris, who raised over $1 billion during her 107-day run for president, reportedly ended her campaign with approximately $20 million in debt. Democratic National Committee official Lindy Li highlighted the financial strain in a Fox & Friends Weekend interview, calling the campaign “a $1 billion disaster.”

“They’re $20 million or $18 million in debt. It’s incredible, and I raised millions of that. I have friends that I have to be accountable to and explain what happened because I told them it was a margin-of-error race,” Li stated.

Li also noted that Harris’s campaign chair, Jen O’Malley Dillon, assured donors that Harris was positioned to win. This optimism reportedly drove additional donations, leading some supporters to feel misled when Harris ultimately exited the race.

Trump’s Proposal: A Bipartisan Gesture of Unity

In his post, Trump mentioned that the GOP has a surplus of funds, thanks in part to what he described as “Earned Media,” which doesn’t require campaign expenses. He proposed that these funds be considered for assisting Harris’s campaign debts as a bipartisan gesture.

“We have a lot of money left over in that our biggest asset in the campaign was ‘Earned Media,’ and that doesn’t cost very much,” Trump wrote. “Now they are being squeezed by vendors and others. Whatever we can do to help them during this difficult period, I would strongly recommend we, as a Party and for the sake of desperately needed UNITY, do.”

While no official response has come from the Democratic Party or from Harris’s campaign on Trump’s comments, the suggestion has sparked conversations on social media about the potential for rare bipartisan financial support in the world of political campaigns.
